Robin just posted that he found an issue many people already argued about.

Normally only the blade checks if you hit for damage, but the shaft also detects hits against shields and static stuff like terrain, walls, etc so you can't pass through them with the shaft and then hit the guy behind with the blade. This code had broken, so the shafts are currently ethereal. We will have this fixed as soon as possible, but we're also scrambling to get the release build done in time, so I can't make any promises when this fix will reach live servers, just soon.

So i guess we can look forward to more shields again.  :)
