Another cool feature is the ability to look from an individual soldiers eyes on the battlefield. In other TW games you can zoom down until you are right over the unit, but now you can actually look out the eyes of a soldier, and switch soldiers by using the mouse wheel. If you have your unit spread out in a big line, you can go all the way down the line and see what each individual soldier sees, including the back of their horses head.

Small correction: This feature already was in Empire. Press Delete when having selected any unit and you'll see the battlefield from their perspective, scroll to change the unit.

e.: Maybe not delete, try those buttons around it too, can't remember which one it was.

Yep, and finally you'll be able to be yourself again Morii.

I always loved the red armour that the Morii wear. Their armour brings to mind, images from that film Akira Kurasawa film called 'Ran'.
Having said that, I think there is a lot of hype surrounding Kurasawa's films, there are so many other great Samurai films like 'Kagemusha', 'Samurai banners' and others.

Ah I've seen Ran, and wasn't it a scene from that movie that was used in the game as well? Ran, as far as I remember, was kind of shakespearian (betrayal etc.), but mostly very long and a bit boring.

I think next week we ll have a viewing of Gohatto in a Tokugawa culture focus course I take. Anyone seen that movie? I think its about gay samurai.. ::)

p.s. I hope Morii-clan in STW II can still get cheap warrior monks :P

I really liked the old system without movement points, you could just go from province to province in every turn.

Nah Thats unrealistic and not funny in my opinion , so there shoukd be just many  battle field as the provinces , and thats odd in my opninion.

ah well its all about perspective, I really like the battles themselves and couldn't really care much about logistics and stuff. That is why I like the old system.

http://www.pcgamer.com/2010/06/23/exclusive-shogun-ii-the-return-of-total-war/

This interview is from the 23/06/2010, somewhat old, but I somehow managed to miss it until now.

Here's some facts summed up:

  • The campaign will start in 1540
  • There will be eight factions (clans) plus a ninth tutorial faction
  • They will try to give generals some personality by adding more specific traits, inspired by the often bizarre stories of old Japan
  • The inspiring speeches prior to a battle will return
  • Next to generals, there will also be hero units, specialised characters whose mere presence should make battles "astounding"
  • Sieges will be very different from the ones in the European based TWs - Castles will be built like a wedding cake, with different layers/tiers, so there won't be any "gunning down the walls, then pouring in" anymore
  • Naval combat will also be changed - In Empire it was all about "Who has the bigger ship", whereas in Shogun the battles will be decided by tactical positioning of your vessels. Japanese ships were basically just swimming sheds, firing flaming arrows from a distance and then boarding other ships once they get close. Those battles will always take place at the shore.
  • Japanese ships will be oar-controlled. You tell them where to go and that's what they'll do, no more blind sailing when you're not looking
  • Conquerable regions will come with traits associated to them, so now you'll have to think about which village/castle to conquer first
  • The AI will finally be overhauled. At least that's what the devs promised.
  • The campaign will only take place on Japan, a region that's much smaller than in any other TW, yet filled with many more details
  • Art will be one of the leading motives for the game designers. They try to make their soldiers look like a piece of art rather than just "another unit"
  • Night battles return
  • Multiplayer will be a big part of the game, though they don't want to reveal too much about it just yet
